The Philistines placed the captured ark in the temple of Dagon, but their idol twice fell before it—increasingly shattered—demonstrating God’s supremacy over false gods. The Lord then struck Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron with severe tumors and panic. Realizing the ark brought divine judgment, the Philistines moved it from city to city in fear. The chapter displays God’s holiness, His power over the nations, and His ability to vindicate His own name without human assistance.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
Dagon falling before the ark foreshadows the defeat of all idols before Christ, whose resurrection proves His victory over every false power
