As the Philistines gathered for war, Saul, terrified and abandoned by the presence of God due to his long rebellion, received no answer through dreams, prophets, or the Urim. In desperation, he sought out a medium at Endor—violating God’s law—and asked her to summon Samuel. God allowed Samuel’s spirit to appear, pronouncing judgment: the kingdom was torn from Saul, and he and his sons would die the next day. Saul collapsed in fear, weakened by terror and fasting. The medium gave him food, and he returned to camp knowing his end was near. The chapter exposes the bleak emptiness of a life lived apart from God and the tragic consequences of rejecting His voice.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
Saul’s desperate turning to forbidden sources highlights humanity’s need for the true Mediator—Christ—who brings God’s word to us and gives life rather than judgment.
