Worn down by years of fleeing, David feared Saul would one day succeed in killing him, so he sought refuge with Achish, king of Gath. Achish granted him the town of Ziklag, where David lived for sixteen months with his men and their families. During this time, David raided surrounding enemies—Amalekites, Geshurites, and Girzites—killing all survivors so none could report his actions. Yet he led Achish to believe he was attacking Judah, making the Philistine king think David had permanently alienated himself from Israel. Though David’s choices were morally complex, God permitted this season to protect David until Saul’s downfall. The chapter reveals David’s human fears and strategic cunning, yet also God’s quiet oversight during a spiritually ambiguous chapter of his life.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David living as an exile among foreigners parallels Christ, who dwelt among a world not His own while faithfully awaiting the Father’s perfect timing.
