Saul pursued David in the Wilderness of En Gedi with three thousand men. Unaware, Saul entered the very cave where David and his men were hiding. David’s men urged him to kill Saul, but instead David secretly cut off the corner of Saul’s robe. Even this act troubled his conscience, and he restrained his men from harming Saul. After Saul left, David revealed from a safe distance what he had done, showing that he meant no harm and pleading with Saul to see his innocence. Saul, moved to tears, acknowledged that David was more righteous than he and would indeed be king. The chapter displays David’s deep reverence for God, refusing to seize the throne by violence but trusting God’s timing.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David’s refusal to return evil for evil foreshadows Christ, who blessed His enemies and overcame evil with perfect righteousness and mercy.
