David learned that the Philistines were attacking Keilah and sought God’s guidance about whether he should intervene. The Lord instructed him to save the town, and David led a successful rescue. But Saul, hearing David was in a walled city, planned to trap him. David again sought the Lord, who revealed that the people of Keilah would hand him over to Saul. David left the city, escaping another trap. Jonathan visited David in the wilderness, strengthening him in God and reaffirming their covenant. Saul nearly overtook David in the wilderness of Maon, but a Philistine attack forced him to turn away at the last moment. The chapter demonstrates David’s constant dependence on God’s direction and the Lord’s faithful protection from every snare.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David rescuing Keilah and guiding his people through prayerful dependence reflects Christ, the Good Shepherd, who delivers His flock and leads them by the Father’s will.
