David escaped to the cave of Adullam, where his brothers and a growing band of distressed, indebted, and embittered men gathered to him—men who would eventually become his mighty warriors. David arranged safety for his parents in Moab, showing his compassion during hardship. Meanwhile, Saul, consumed by paranoia, accused his own servants of conspiring with David. Doeg the Edomite informed Saul that Ahimelek had helped David, leading Saul to order the slaughter of the priests at Nob. When Saul’s soldiers refused, Doeg carried out the brutal execution, killing eighty-five priests and destroying the entire town. Only Abiathar, Ahimelek’s son, escaped and fled to David, who received him with protection. The chapter reveals Saul’s descent into murderous tyranny and David’s rising role as a refuge for the oppressed.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David receiving Abiathar, the lone survivor, mirrors Christ who receives the broken, rejected, and persecuted—becoming a refuge for all who flee to Him.
