1 Samuel 2

Hannah’s prayer exalted God’s holiness, sovereignty, and power to reverse human circumstances, setting a theological foundation for the book. Meanwhile, Samuel grew in purity and devotion before the Lord, but Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, abused their priestly roles—stealing offerings, dishonoring God, and corrupting worship. A prophetic warning came to Eli that his house would fall because he failed to restrain them. Yet Samuel continued to grow in favor with God and people, showing God raising up faithful leadership as corrupt leadership deteriorated. The chapter highlights divine justice, the reversal of pride, and God’s intention to purify His people.

Foreshadowing of Christ:
Hannah’s prayer anticipates Mary’s Magnificat, and Samuel growing in favor with God and man foreshadows Christ, who would grow in wisdom, stature, and divine favor as the true and sinless priest.
