Saul’s hatred intensified to the point that he openly commanded Jonathan and his servants to kill David. Jonathan pleaded for David, reminding Saul of David’s loyalty and innocence, and Saul temporarily relented. But when war resumed and David again succeeded, Saul attempted to kill him with a spear. Michal, David’s wife, warned him and helped him escape by lowering him through a window and deceiving Saul’s messengers. David fled to Samuel at Ramah, where God’s Spirit repeatedly overpowered the men Saul sent to capture him—and finally Saul himself—rendering him helpless. The chapter displays God’s active protection over His anointed servant despite human schemes.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David’s escape from murderous rulers foreshadows Christ, whom corrupt leaders also sought to kill, yet whose life was preserved until the appointed time by the Father’s sovereign hand.
