David’s victory over Goliath brought him into Saul’s court, where Jonathan, recognizing David’s godliness, formed a covenant bond with him. David served faithfully, succeeding in every task, and Israel loved him. But as the people praised David more highly than Saul, Saul grew consumed with jealousy. Twice he tried to pin David with a spear, fearing the Lord was with David but had departed from him. Saul schemed to trap David by offering his daughters in marriage, hoping the Philistines would kill him. Yet David continued to succeed because God was with him, and Saul’s fear and hatred only deepened. The chapter highlights the contrast between David’s humility and Saul’s insecurity.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David’s favor with God and man despite being despised by the ruling powers anticipates Christ, who was loved by many, hated by the jealous leaders, and yet walked in divine favor.
