God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king from among Jesse’s sons. Though Samuel was impressed by Eliab’s appearance, God reminded him that He looks at the heart, not outward qualities. David, the youngest and least likely in human terms, was chosen and anointed, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully. Meanwhile, God’s Spirit departed from Saul, and a tormenting spirit troubled him. David was brought to play the harp for Saul, bringing relief through his Spirit-filled music. Saul unknowingly welcomed the very one who would replace him. The chapter reveals God’s sovereign choice, His preference for humble hearts, and the rising of a Spirit-anointed king.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David’s anointing as God’s chosen king prefigures Christ—the true Son of David—who is anointed by the Spirit as the eternal King whose rule brings peace and healing.
