God commanded Saul through Samuel to completely destroy Amalek for their ancient attack on Israel during the Exodus, but Saul selectively obeyed—sparing King Agag and keeping the best livestock under the pretense of sacrifice. When confronted, Saul insisted he had obeyed, revealing a heart more concerned with appearances than obedience. Samuel declared that obedience is better than sacrifice and revealed that God had rejected Saul as king. Samuel himself executed Agag, completing the Lord’s command. The chapter exposes Saul’s self-deception, partial obedience, and pride, and reveals that leadership without surrender to God always ends in ruin.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
Where Saul failed to obey fully, Christ came as the true and better King whose perfect obedience—even unto death—fulfills God’s will completely.
