At the beginning of his reign, Solomon loves the Lord but still worships at high places, and in a dream at Gibeon, God invites him to ask for whatever he desires. Instead of riches or long life, Solomon humbly requests wisdom to govern God’s great people, and the Lord is pleased, granting him not only unmatched wisdom but also honor and wealth. The famous judgment of the two women claiming the same child displays this God-given discernment: Solomon’s probing command to divide the child reveals the true mother’s compassion and restores the baby to her. This chapter teaches us that true greatness in leadership begins with humility and a heart that values God’s people and God’s will above personal gain. Solomon’s wise request hints at Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and who perfectly shepherds His people with truth, compassion, and insight into the heart.
