1 Kings 2 — David’s Final Charge and Solomon’s Secure Throne

As David’s life comes to an end, he charges Solomon to be strong, to act like a man, and to walk in obedience to the Lord, keeping His commands so that the promise to David’s house might stand. Solomon then begins the difficult work of establishing his throne firmly: he deals decisively with Adonijah, removes Abiathar the priest, and executes Joab and Shimei according to their long-standing guilt and David’s instructions. It can feel harsh to modern ears, but the chapter shows that justice, wise discernment, and dealing with hidden rebellions are essential for a stable kingdom. In this, we see a foreshadowing of Christ, the greater Son of David, who will one day judge with perfect righteousness—exposing secret loyalties, removing evil, and establishing a kingdom where justice and mercy meet.
