1 Kings 18 — Confrontation on Mount Carmel

In the third year of the drought, God sends Elijah back to Ahab, and a great showdown is arranged on Mount Carmel between the Lord and Baal. As Israel gathers along with 450 prophets of Baal, Elijah challenges the people to stop wavering and choose whom they will serve. The false prophets cry out all day, cutting themselves, but no voice answers. Elijah then rebuilds the Lord’s altar, drenches the sacrifice with water, and prays simply that God would reveal Himself so that the people would know He is turning their hearts back. Fire falls from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, wood, stones, dust, and water, and the people fall on their faces, confessing, “The Lord, He is God!” The prophets of Baal are executed, and rain returns as Elijah prays and runs before Ahab’s chariot. This powerful scene points to Christ, the One who calls us out of double-mindedness, who reveals the true God not with consuming fire upon us, but by taking the judgment upon Himself so that our hearts might be turned back in repentance and faith.
