1 Kings 17 — Elijah and the God Who Provides Life

Elijah suddenly appears before Ahab, announcing a drought as judgment on Israel’s idolatry, and then is led by God into hidden places of provision. By the brook Kerith, ravens bring him bread and meat; when the brook dries, he is sent to a widow in Zarephath whose flour and oil miraculously never run out as she shares her last meal in obedience to God’s word. When her son later dies, Elijah cries out to the Lord and stretches himself over the child, and God restores the boy’s life, leading the widow to confess that Elijah truly speaks God’s word. In a time of national unfaithfulness, God shows Himself as the living God who sustains, tests faith, and even has power over death. Elijah’s ministry foreshadows Christ, who comes as the greater Prophet, providing bread for the hungry, caring for outsiders, and ultimately conquering death so that those who trust Him might live.
