God’s word comes against Baasha just as it had against Jeroboam, and his house is wiped out because he walked in the same sins. A series of rapid, violent transitions follows: Elah is assassinated by Zimri, who reigns only seven days before Omri prevails; then Omri establishes a new capital at Samaria and does more evil than all before him. Finally, his son Ahab takes the throne and surpasses even this evil, marrying Jezebel, serving Baal, building a temple for Baal in Samaria, and provoking the Lord more than all previous kings. The rebuilding of Jericho at the cost of a man’s sons underlines the curse of disregarding God’s word. The chapter shows how sin escalates when unchecked and how idolatry, once welcomed, pours rot into the foundations of a nation. This dark backdrop sets the stage for the light of God’s prophetic word and points to Christ, who will one day confront all false gods and establish a kingdom of truth where no rival idol can stand.
