1 Kings 14 — Judgment on Jeroboam and Decline in Judah

When Jeroboam’s son falls ill, he sends his wife in disguise to the prophet Ahijah, hoping for a favorable word, but God reveals her identity and pronounces severe judgment: every male of Jeroboam’s house will be cut off, the child will die as she returns, and Israel will one day be uprooted because of the sins Jeroboam has led them into. Meanwhile in Judah, under Rehoboam, the people also fall into idolatry—high places, sacred pillars, and even male shrine prostitution are tolerated. As a result, Shishak king of Egypt invades Jerusalem and carries off treasures from the temple and the royal palace. The chapter shows that sin in both north and south brings loss, sorrow, and humiliation, and that leadership which tolerates idols damages an entire nation. Yet even in judgment, God preserves a lamp in David’s line, foreshadowing Christ, the true Son of David, who will be a faithful shepherd to both wayward Israel and Judah and gather all who will return to Him.
