1 Kings 13 — The Man of God and the Disobedient Prophet

God sends a man of God from Judah to confront Jeroboam at the altar in Bethel, proclaiming that a future king named Josiah will defile this idolatrous place and confirming the message with a sign as the altar splits and the ashes pour out. When Jeroboam’s hand is withered and then restored at the prophet’s prayer, it is clear that the Lord alone holds power. Yet the man of God, who had been strictly commanded not to eat or drink or return by the same way, is deceived by an older prophet claiming a word from an angel and disobeys God’s direct instruction. He is killed by a lion on the road—his body strangely guarded by both lion and donkey—and buried with honor by the very prophet who misled him. The chapter is a solemn warning that even God’s servants must cling to His word above all other voices, however spiritual they sound. It anticipates Christ, who is Himself the perfect Prophet and Word of God, who never bends to deceit and whose voice we must follow above every competing claim.
