1 Kings 12 — The Kingdom Divides

After Solomon’s death, Rehoboam inherits the throne, and the people, led by Jeroboam, appeal for relief from the heavy yoke Solomon had placed upon them. Rejecting the wise counsel of older advisors, Rehoboam answers harshly, promising even greater burdens, and the northern tribes revolt, crowning Jeroboam as king over Israel while Rehoboam retains only Judah and Benjamin. Yet beneath the political tensions, the writer notes that this division is from the Lord, fulfilling the word spoken through the prophet Ahijah. Tragically, Jeroboam, fearing loss of allegiance, sets up golden calves at Bethel and Dan, creating a counterfeit worship system that will ensnare Israel for generations. The torn kingdom reveals the cost of prideful leadership and false religion and leaves God’s people fractured. This division makes us long for Christ, the true King who brings unity rather than division and who calls His scattered people into one kingdom under His gentle and righteous rule.
