1 Kings 11 — Solomon’s Fall into Idolatry

In heartbreaking contrast to his earlier devotion, Solomon’s many foreign wives turn his heart away from the Lord as he grows older, and he builds high places for their gods, tolerating and participating in idolatry. The man who once prayed so earnestly now compromises the very covenant that brought him blessing. In response, God raises up adversaries—Hadad, Rezon, and Jeroboam—and declares that the kingdom will be torn from Solomon’s son, though not entirely, for the sake of David. The chapter is a sobering reminder that wisdom without continued obedience can still lead to ruin, and that unchecked compromise, especially in matters of love and worship, can erode a life slowly but surely. Yet even here, God preserves a remnant and a promise of a continuing line, pointing forward to Christ, the Son of David whose heart never turns away, and whose faithful obedience secures a kingdom that cannot be divided or lost.
