1 Kings 10 — The Queen of Sheba and Solomon’s Splendor

The Queen of Sheba travels a great distance to test Solomon with hard questions, bringing lavish gifts and expecting to be impressed—but what she sees exceeds all reports. She marvels at his wisdom, the happiness of his servants, the order of his court, and the burnt offerings he makes at the temple. Solomon’s wealth and glory are described in almost overwhelming terms: gold, ivory, exotic animals, shields, thrones, chariots, and horses—all showing a king at the height of earthly splendor. Yet the abundance, while a sign of God’s blessing, also foreshadows danger, as the law warned that kings should not multiply horses, gold, or alliances. This chapter points us to Christ, whose wisdom and glory surpass Solomon’s, yet who came not with displays of worldly luxury, but in humility and poverty, inviting us into a better kingdom where true riches are found in knowing Him.
