David is old and frail, and the kingdom seems vulnerable as his son Adonijah exalts himself and gathers followers to seize the throne. While David lies unaware, Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba intervene, reminding David of God’s promise that Solomon would reign after him. David publicly confirms Solomon as king, having him anointed by Zadok the priest and proclaimed with great rejoicing, while Adonijah’s rebellion collapses in fear. The chapter shows how God’s purposes stand even when human schemes and political maneuvering threaten to derail them—He works through courageous, faithful voices to uphold His covenant. Here we see a shadow of Christ, the true Son of David, whose kingship is not seized by ambition but given by the Father’s decree and publicly affirmed in heaven and on earth.
